Antonio Biasucci (born in 1961) is an acclaimed contemporary Italian photographer known for his intense black and white images that focus on the culture of Southern Italy, the primary elements of existence, and archetypal plasticity. His work often explores themes of Southern Culture: Biasucci began his career documenting the urban suburbs of Naples and the rituals and environments of his native village of Dragoni. His later work delves into essential elements of life, such as in the projects Magma (focused on volcanoes), Pane (bread), Fango (mud), and Corpo Latteo (milky body). His photographs aim to connect individual and collective memory to an atemporal space, using original framing and dramatic chiaroscuro to give his images a theatrical feel. Il manifesto Biasucci has received significant international recognition, including the "European Kodak Panorama" prize at Arles in 1992 and the "Kraszna/Krausz Photography Book Awards" in 2005 for his book Res: Lo stato delle cose. His work is held in the permanent collections of numerous museums and institutions worldwide, including the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris and MAXXI in Rome. He was also among the artists featured in the Italian Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale. He is currently exhibiting his work, such as the exhibition Insula which reinterprets the island of Capri, at various galleries and institutions.
